The Living Language Program

The Living Language Program is funded through a grant from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Program has worked with Tribal Elders serving on an Elder Panel to produce numerous videos and recordings concerning Omaha language allowing for all tribal members’ access to learning Omaha language through the Family Resource Center website.

Goal & Objectives

The Project has one primary Goal- To increase the hours of spoken Umóⁿhoⁿ language among all Tribal citizens thereby creating an immersive language supportive of learners. To achieve this Project Goal, the following 4 Objectives have been identified:

  1. Unite all Umóⁿhoⁿ language workers through the Coordination and Collaboration work of an Omaha Tribe Umóⁿhoⁿ Language Department.  Clarify and accelerate language work across all programs and institutions through this effort which will reach those outside the school settings, i.e. the parent generation.

  2.  Stabilize a permanent and growing Umóⁿhoⁿ language space within the activities of the Umóⁿhoⁿ Language Department through Elder speaking events and Elder-Apprentice pairings.

  3. Build a language bridge in that Umóⁿhoⁿ language space between school-age children and their parent generation by involving these groups in Elder speaking events.

  4. Reach out to Tribal members off the reservation and to future generations by documenting, recording and putting Umóⁿhoⁿ language resources and content online
